Michael – Frame Building Course
12. December 2023Disc Racer DOTS!!!
12. December 2023Guido took our one-day frame building course. I always thought this course was a great idea… we cut the tubes beforehand, and you can solder your own lugged racing bike in just one day. Unfortunately, this course was not well attended, so we no longer offer it. Guido was the last visitor of the one-day course….
How did you come up with the idea of building your own frame?
A few years ago, I was looking for a steel hardtail frame. However, I couldn’t find anything that I really liked. After some consideration, the idea came to build one myself. So, I bought a CAD program, ordered a tube set, worked on it with a saw and file, and built a simple frame jig. I had no idea how to join the frame, but I found someone who could weld it for me. I’ve been riding the hardtail for the fourth year now, although the rear wheel isn’t quite straight 🙂 Well, since then, this topic hasn’t let me go anymore…..
Why did you choose this frame? What do you plan to do with it?
For some time now, I’ve been eager to ride narrow tires and asphalt again. For that, I needed a racing bike. Since Robert offers my desired course in combination with this frame, the decision was clear. And what do I plan to do with it? I want to ride it 🙂
What is special to you about your self-built (soldered) frame?
Well, the feeling of having crafted it myself; that’s pretty cool.
How was your time in the frame building course?
It was great. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot. Robert’s workshop with its backyard vibe is just superb, and Robert himself is a very pleasant and cool guy. He somehow embodies a bit of that American MTB pioneering spirit à la Joe Breeze & Co. here in Potsdam 🙂
How does your finished bike ride?
It rides great. I didn’t even know I could ride that fast :). I’m a bit surprised that the frame transmits a lot of feedback; I would have thought it would absorb more bumps. Well, it is supposed to be a racing bike after all :). However, I should mention that this is likely more due to the components and the fork than the frame itself…
How did you find me, and how did you hear about the frame building courses?
The first time I noticed you was at a Berlin bike show, and then I occasionally visited your website….
