12. December 2023Frame Building Course Q & A – Gerald
12. December 2023Hello Robert,
How are you? Are you still busy giving courses? I’ve been wanting to send you pictures of my GT for a long time. And now that it’s being used well, I’ve taken some photos…
Best regards from snowy Bavaria,
Jan
How did you come up with the idea of building your own frame?
I wanted to build my very own customized bike with all the extras I’ve imagined. You can’t find anything like that on the market. Moreover, I wanted to do as much as possible myself—even the frame—not just buy something off the shelf.
Why did you choose this frame? What do you plan to do with it?
Since it’s not exactly cheap, I wanted a bike that is as versatile as possible and that I can use a lot. So, for the sporty commute to work in any weather, as well as for a longer bikepacking tour (e.g. from Finland to Germany, which unfortunately I didn’t end up doing).
What is special to you about your self-built frame?
That there’s definitely no second one like it. So, it’s unique. And that I built it with my (and a bit of your) hands myself.
How was your time in the frame building course?
Very nice. At first very relaxed (almost too relaxed) and at the end quite strenuous. However, you always radiated a calmness that made it not stressful. Additionally, I could discuss bike topics with you and Jakob, which isn’t possible with other people.
How does your finished bike ride?
Great! At first, I thought it was a bit too nervous, but now I’ve gotten used to it. Everything fits and works, and thanks to the belt and Rohloff hub, it glides along absolutely silently.
