Michal – Q & A – Frame Building Course
12. December 2023Axel – eTap Gravel Bike in Frame Building Course
12. December 2023How did you come up with the idea of building your own frame?
I used to spend a lot of time on my bike, and with every bike, something didn’t fit my body size or my requirements, so I always had to make some compromises. When looking for a new bike, I found that various compromises were again necessary. Since I am passionate about working with metal both professionally and privately, it made sense to pursue this path; however, soldering and the specific tools/jigs gave me some headaches.
Why did you choose this frame? What do you plan to do with it?
I needed a bike for my new commute that can handle different surfaces; I didn’t want to miss my racing bike in this regard. We largely adopted the seating position from the racing bike, adjusted it a bit more upright, and made the frame shorter, giving me more flexibility with the seat post and stem. Additionally, I was tired of always having to charge or mount the battery-powered lights, so the “integrated” lighting became an additional requirement. Besides commuting, I want the bike to enrich my leisure activities and be used for weekend tours, which is made possible by the additional mounting points (bottom bracket/top tube).
What is special to you about your self-built frame?
The union of dreams, wishes, and skills.
How was your time in the frame building course?
The exchange and the opportunity to try things out made the week with you a valuable time filled with many great memories.
How does your finished bike ride?
The bike can be controlled safely on the intended routes (from asphalt to washed-out forest paths) and is a lot of fun to ride. Additionally, it meets all requirements regarding seating position, riding smoothness, lighting, and is free from rattling or grinding noises. The effort has paid off.
How did you find me, and how did you hear about the frame building courses?
When searching for information on frame building, you can’t overlook your work. I am incredibly grateful that I was able to slip into the appointment at such short notice.
