Frame Building Course: Lugged Steel Frame
Build your own
custom lugged frame!
In this 5 Day frame building course you will:
* learn how to build a classic road frame and fork with lugs and rim brakes (centerpull)
* or a lugged road/gravel/randoneur/touring frame with disc brakes, frame only
* a classic lugged road frame is simple enough that you can finish it in 4 days, and you then have Friday to build a fork. For almost anything else, you will likely need 5 full days to finish your frame, and you will not have enough time to build a fork.
* help to design the frame geometry to fit your riding style and size
* cut the tubes, file, and braze them together
* at the end you will have built your own custom lugged frame that you can be proud of and ride for years to come!
Lugged. Brazed. Frames.
Building a frame with lugs is the perfect course for everyone that wants a bike that will stand the test of time. The tubes are connected with lugs, and steel is the only material that can be used to build a lugged frame. I have a nice selection of lugs that you can choose from to build your frame.
Using lugs to create a bike strengthens the frame where it needs it the most, at the joints. And they look pretty, too, especially compared to run of the mill welded frames you can buy. It’s also a great technique for beginners as it is easy to learn.
It could be yours.
This is what you get.
1. When and Where
The Lugged Frame Building Course lasts 5 days. The course takes place in my workshop in Potsdam-Babelsberg (only 30 minutes from Berlin via the S-Bahn). Please send me a message to enquire about course dates. There are a maximum of 3 students.
2. What you can build
In the Lugged Frame Building Course you can build a road bike, singlespeed, cyclocross, gravel, or a trekking bike. For a mountain bike you’ll need to take a look at our Fillet Brazed Frame Building Course.
3. Difficulty level
Lugged frames are beautiful. And they can only be built with steel. Because it is relatively fast and easy to build a frame with lugs, it’s a great technique for beginners. And the results are something you can really be proud of.
4. What you do
Everything. Some frame building courses concentrate more on the theory. In some courses tubes are already cut before you get there. In my opinion cutting and brazing is the bread and butter of frame building. In my courses, under my direction, you will build the frame completely by yourself.
5. What I do
I have all the tools you’ll need to build your frame, plus thousands of hours of experience building pretty much every kind of bike you can think of. Working together, you can build your own frame that you will go home happy with.
6. Extras
Material costs are not included in the course fees. The material cost can vary quite a bit from frame to frame. The typical material cost for a lugged frame is usually between 350-550 Euro, but can go as high as around 700 Euro. The material cost for a fork is around 100 Euro.
Happy Faces. Beautiful Bikes.

“Thanks for the awesome week! The frame building course was awesome, I can’t think of a better way to spend my vacation. The ‘work’ was really fun and I learned a ton. I’m really happy with how the frame turned out, and super proud that I actually built it myself. The geometry fits me perfectly and rides even better than I could have imagined!”

“Thanks again for the awesome week! The course was really fun and I am really proud of the frame I built. I think you are a great teacher. Always patient, you explained everything really well, and the ‘work’ of building the frame was never really like ‘work’ and I had a great time! :-)”

“Sorry for bothering you with pictures from my bike. I tested it today for the first time and it was fantastic. I usually do not tend to be super-enthusiastic and there were of course some minor issues (like getting the position of the saddle right etc) but this was by far the most convincing test-ride ever. Super stable, yet agile, very direct. I loved every second with it.”
