Two Days, One Steel Frame: Heiner Builds His Own Bike

Heiner is 26, from Kiel – and just built his own custom steel road bike frame. By hand. In only two days. With us at BIG Forest Frameworks.

“If you’re passionate about bikes and curious about how things are made, then this is the kind of thing you want to do,” he said in our interview right after finishing the course. Sure – you could just buy a frame. Probably for less money. But for Heiner, it was about more than the final product.

He wanted to understand how a frame is made. To get hands-on. To experience the process. Brazing, cutting, shaping – not watching, but doing.

From Raw Tubes to Custom Geometry

Heiner took part in our compact 2-day course. It’s shorter than our classic 5-day program, but no less intense. “Robert really made me sweat,” Heiner says with a grin. “It wasn’t stressful – but it was definitely work. And it was fun!”

Part of what made the fast pace possible: smart preparation and clever technology. In Heiner’s case, we used 3D-printed stainless steel parts to simplify the connection of seatstays and chainstays – making the process faster without compromising quality. Still, Heiner had to do everything himself. Nothing was pre-assembled.

Proud? You Bet.

At the end of day two, Heiner held his finished frame in his hands – proud and satisfied.
“I think it looks great,” he said. “I’m excited to see it painted. And I’d definitely come back.”
