Building your own bike – for many, it’s a dream that seems out of reach. But in our 5-day frame building course, it becomes reality! One of our former participants shares how he got into frame building, the decisions he made, and how his self-built bike rides. Get inspired!
How did you get the idea to build your own frame?
Actually, you got me hooked on it. I saw some of your posts on Instagram in 2019 and was really taken by the idea of building my own frame.
Why did you choose this particular frame? What do you plan to do with it?
That wasn’t an easy decision. I was surprised with the frame building course as a gift for my 40th birthday, and at first, I was overwhelmed because I already had several bikes in my garage.
I ended up choosing an all-road road bike frame because I already had a road bike with rim brakes. That meant hydraulic disc brakes and the option for either mechanical or electronic shifting (future-proof with UDH). I wanted a bike for fast one-day or multi-day rides, and it was important to me to have the option to mount fenders and a rack.
What makes your self-built frame special to you?
Considering that I had never brazed before, that alone makes it special. Plus, having complete freedom in the design was amazing. I built it myself! 🤩
How was your experience in the frame building course?
The time in the course was exciting in a positive way, and it flew by. It was great to gain experience with brazing and working with different materials and tools. The exchange and collaboration with other participants were also fantastic.
How does your finished bike ride?
Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to ride it much yet, but the first impression is great and very promising.
