Jürgen visited Big Forest Frameworks in February 2023, and now his bike is completed. Great paint job, right? Jürgen took a bit of time to answer our questions….
How did you come up with the idea of building your own frame?
I was looking for a custom-sized bike. During my online research, I came across the Big Forest Frameworks website. I have always enjoyed learning new things. I liked the idea a lot, and I found it extremely appealing to build a “custom frame” myself. So, I promptly booked a course.
Why did you choose this frame? What do you plan to do with it?
I want to use the bike for shorter and longer tours. The bike should fit me and my style, be comfortable, and well-equipped.
What is special to you about your self-built frame?
The special thing is that I created it myself—with great support from the Big Forest Frameworks team. I was free to incorporate my own ideas and received full support in doing so. Completing the bike was also exciting. I learned a lot during the selection of components and their assembly. It was immensely enjoyable.
How was your time in the frame building course?
It was an absolutely great time without reservations. I enjoyed the fantastic atmosphere in the workshop, and the “guys” were always approachable for questions or problems. Efficient solutions were developed through our exchange of ideas, even down to the smallest detail. I also found the interaction with the other two “frame building students” very pleasant and inspiring. Not to forget the newly acquired skill of silver brazing. I can only recommend that it is a real enrichment to learn new craft skills.
How does your finished bike ride?
It is very pleasant for me to ride. The Rohloff gearbox is simply fantastic. It is the first bike that is so perfectly tailored to my body measurements and wishes. I am honestly surprised at the difference it makes compared to a conventional off-the-shelf bike.
How did you find me, and how did you hear about the frame building courses?
I stumbled upon it by chance while searching the web for a bike manufacturer offering custom frames. After studying the website of Big Forest Frameworks, it was clear to me—this is it! A great concept.
